What am i looking for when looking at a video card for a desktop?

what should i look for and what does it mean? i have specs for cards. it looks like this(no idea what they mean):

Radeon HD 4850 512MB

Codename: RV770

Process: 55nm

Universal Shaders: 800

Texture Units: 40

ROPs: 16

Memory Bus: 256-bit

Core Speed MHz: 625

Memory Speed MHz: 993 (1,986 effective)

DirectX/Shader Model: DX 10.1/SM 4.1|||the model #,,,tells you everthing...then google it for reviews..

here is a chart that shows the fastest, to slowest video card...the fastest cards are best for gaming..but expensive too.-

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gamin…

and a chart for slower cards-

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gamin…

i also look at the memory speed sometimes..but usally everyone just goes by the model number...reviews are very important..just find a card that you might be interested in,,,and google the model # in google. and read the review....google like this- ati 4870 reviews.....hope this helps|||The Speed specs can be important to know if the card is overclocked.(overclocked may require extra cooling)

And the directx version is important for games.

Performance specs to look at are Memory Bandwidth,

Texture Fill Rate, and Pixel Fill Rate

Like they do at GPUReview

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?…

You need to have a PCI-E graphics port to use that card.|||To answer you question. You are looking for:

1. Video Memory capacity, in this case it's 512 MB - higher is better, i.e. 876 MB, 1 GB, 1.7 GB, etc.

2. Speed(s), the higher the number the better.

Rule of thumb, the greater the number the better.|||Just look at the card benchmarks if you're not sure they will give you a general idea even if you don't know the terms...

What kind of video card upgrade is right for a Sony Vaio PCV RS600 series desktop?

My computer is nearly 4 years old now my system specs are:

DDR PC 3200

Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB

Number of Banks: 2

Dual Channel Support: Yes

CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel

CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz Model 3, Stepping 4

CPU Speed: 2793 MHz

Can someone please advise me?

|||It wont support PCIe, so get a 256MB or a 512MB AGP card, either Nvidia or ATI. Get one that uses DDR2, the cheap ones are really junk.

What is the best video card to get for, my desktop pc, but with a smaller price to play any game i want?

What type of memory do I need to buy for my custom desktop and also a question on a video card!?

Hello All,

I have a custom desktop that I bought that has 1 gb ram, I am looking to upgrade it to 4gb. 2x2. I have a Biostar P4M80-M4 (for intel processor) that has the following info on the box:

-Socket 478/FSB 800mhz

-AGP 8X

-DDR 400

-SATA/RAID

Im just not that well experienced in buying parts for computers so I just wanted to know what I needed to make sure the memory had to be compatible with my system. I am running XP but am going to upgrade to VISTA pretty soon.

ALSO, im looking to upgrade my video card and am probably going to get:

BFG Tech BFGE73512GT GeForce 7300GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X

LINK: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143102

What do you guys think of this as a good card, im pretty much just looking to run Flight Simulator X and Red alert 3, but i dont want to spend alot of money on these upgrades. Just enough to make it worth while for a good price. I also heard that this would run hulu vidoes in HD is that right?! Thanks for all the help everyone I really appreciate it!|||your motherboard using 184-pin pc2700 memory...here is a link for some, i have used crucial and it works great..but you can buy it eles-where ..personally, i would use the same brand as in your rig

i have seen folks run simulator x with a 7300le...but if it was me...at least something in the 7600 lineup...good luck|||You need to find out the MHZ on your current RAM, as well as the number of pins it has. Once you've done this, just find one with the same number of pins/MHZ.

That graphics card isn't that good. For an AGP I'd recommend the 7800GS.

Dunno about the HD videos...I don't think hulu hosts HD? But if they do, you would be able to run HD on your current graphics, HD just means higher resolution.|||I'm sorry to tell you but your motherboard only supports a maximum of 2GB of RAM.

If you want to upgrade to 2GB then you'll need to get two 1GB sticks of RAM (PC3200 (DDR400) DDR SDRAM).

As for the video card, that will work with your motherboard and should be able to run those games.

However, that card may not fit in your CPU case. What size tower do you have? If you have a mid-tower ATX form factor case or bigger you'll be fine.|||For RAM, you want DDR 400 RAM Speed

Hp pavilion slimline desktop video card issues, am I doomed from playing Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3?

I have an HP desktop slimline s5390d brand new with Intel® Core i3 , Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic (32-bit), 2GB RAM, but video card Integrated on motherboard (see motherboard and chipset) (with 128MB shared graphics memory). It took me a long time to keep saving on this and was attracted on the minimal space it required, and was planning on buying a great video card later after saving. Starcraft 2 is coming and it requires great performing video card which I don't think is supported by my new desktop. It's just recently that I discovered slimlines only allow low profile video cards. Has anyone found a half sized video card with low power usage that is able to play the coming games. I am beginning to really regret buying this non-upgradeable desktop and it has only just been less than a month. Or am I doomed on not being able to play these games unless I buy a new desktop designed for gaming. Please help|||Something like this : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as… is what you are going to need. Without knowing the specifics about the game you are trying to play, I don't know if it is "enough" video card for it. This what I found for requirements: The minimum system requirements for the Starcraft II Beta are as follows:

PC Minimum Requirements:

• Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1/Windows 7

• 2.2 Ghz Pentium IV or equivalent AMD Athlon processor

• 1 GB system RAM/1.5 GB for Vista and Windows 7

• 128 MB NVidia GeForce 6600 GT/ATI Radeon 9800 PRO video card

• 1024x768 minimum display resolution

• 4 GB free hard space (Beta)

• Broadband connection

Here is what your motherboard has and supports: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum…

This is the problem with "slimline" or "all-in-one" computers. They are very restricted in their ability to upgrade. What you buy is often all you will ever have.

PLEASE HELP/// I bought and install a new video card on my Desktop and is not detecting it.?

I have a Think Centre Desktop from IBM and the card I purchased is a AGP Nvidia 256MB.

I have tried everything , uninstalling the drivers for the one that is part of the motherboard, disabling it on the divice manager and BIOS also when i try to install the drivers it says that it could not find any compatible divice. Please help me!.|||Hi Mate,

Unless you can tell us the model of your IBM its kinda hard to help you out ... but here goes

By the sounds of it your still getting a graphics display so I'm going to go on a limb here as say that your machine has on board graphics . I suggest you on powering up your machine ..... Push the delete button on the screen that shows you your installed memory / drives to enter your bios setting screen.

Look in your bios setting for a menu to disable on board graphics and enable the agp port then save and exit the bios.

On restarting your machine it should detect the new hardware and request the driver CD but after the drivers are installed and your machine is up and running it would pay to go to nvidias web site and down load the latest drivers for your card ... as the drivers on most CD`s are not current to date.

But if your still having trouble , go to IBMs web site ... and look for on line support ... some times depending on the day you can talk to a on line customer support officer for free

Hope this helps ya out

Is this a good desktop for casual gaming/video editing?

http://www.buy.com/prod/lenovo-k330-7727…

Im loving the cpu, the ram amount is great, and the video card quite nice for a new generation. Worth it to buy?|||I would believe so, it has all of the specified features, only I would confer with my seller dude before I bought anything. Wait some more, tip for buying things: dont buy the first thing you see, even if it is the best and you know it. SERIOUSLY|||I would say, based on the specs, defiantly yes. However, I think you should wait for a second opinion. I don't think you need this for casual gaming. It would be a waste.

I added a video card for two screens from my desktop but its know not picking up my orgianl video card HELP?

I presume it is picking up from the new video card, if not ignore the following instructions:

Depending on your video card, you might have installed either NVIDIA Control Panel or ATI Catalyst Centre. If you haven't I think you should research into getting them, they are free to download from the manufactures website.

I can only give you advice on the NVIDIA brand, but they should both follow the same principle.

Within the 'Display' tree the is a sub section labeled, 'Set up Multiple Displays' You will probably find that one of the monitors has been disabled by default, you can change this is either 'Extended' or 'Cloned' with the obvious meaning.

Look in the Help menu if you get stuck, but it all follows a simple basis.

Best Video Card for Gaming Desktop Machine to date?

Okay, I am working on my dream machine, but I am a little lost on the graphics cards nowadays...

Now, I am not too wrapped up on price when it comes to Graphics card...

I take it that currently 2 GB cards are about the "top of the Line" for now correct?

So far, I am going with quad core... 8 gb memory... and unsure on what card to go with...

Any ideas??

Also for extra credit, I am torn between going ahead and going for Vista 64 bit ... or sticking with XP PRO...

Suggestions anyone????|||If you're just looking at video RAM to determine performance, you're going to be fooled. In reality, the GPU specs don't mean anything by themselves. You have to look at performance.

The best desktop video card to date is the nVidia GeForce 295GTX.

You should go with Vista. It's vastly superior to XP and has DirectX10 as well. Or you could wait until Windows 7 comes out. It's awesome.|||The best card is the EVGA GTX 295 Hydro Copper.

You can read the test and all the rest of the available video cards here:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/rade…|||GTX 295. You can purchase the normal version or some factory overclocked versions with water cooling that are especially shiny.

As for OS, go with XP all the way. Vista might have DX10 but there are so many problems with it in every other way it is not worth it. Vista will slow down your system a lot compared to XP.

Also, with the video cards, if you want to make your dream machine as best as it can be, you're going to need to get four video cards running on SLI. What CPU are you using?

What kind of video card do I need for emachine T5022? ?

I am not sure if it would be a PCI or AGP. I am pretty sure its PCI but if someone could confirm I be very thankful. The current Video Card is a integrated "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900". Unfortunately I can not find any information about what motherboard is in this Desktop PC.|||http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AGP_slot.jpg

Whats a good video card for the sims 3?

I need a video card for the sims 3, but i dont know which one to get, i know of the asus geforce 8400 but im not sure if i should get it. I need one in the range of $100-150, $160 the most. Im not the president of real madrid so please people help me

PS i have a desktop computer|||i suggest you getting atleast a 9500GT for sims 3. But why not buy a 9800GTX since you have the budget? With that you can play most of the games currently in the market today.

And also consider your processor. It should have 2 cores at least.

Video card for Desktop PC - NVidia Vs Radeon, I have Radeon 4x 64mb video card on my motherboard?

My motherboard supports agp 2.0 4x video cards. Currently, I have a radeon 64mb card.

- will it be fine if i installed a nvidia 256mb agp 8x/4x card or will only a radeon card work?

- if either is fine which is preferred. I have an intel pentium 4 processor

thanks.|||cant see why not!!!! suck it and see|||Any AGP card (4x or better) should be just fine - to be sure, check with your motherboard manufacturer or PC builder. There is a difference with AGP2x I believe relating to power.|||older video cards used 3.3 volts but newer ones use 1.5 volts. Some motherboards support both but if you have a 64mb radeon with 4x then I would guess you have 1.5v.

Most 256mb cards will be 4x or 8x and will slot in perfectly to replace your old card.

ATI vs nVidia is down to what you want and how much you want to spend. nVidia seem to have cards in the low, medium and hiigh end whereas ATI only really have low and high.

Personally, I have ATI Radeon 9800xt and that's really good and is rock solid but puts out a lot of heat. You may need to invest in better cooling for your PC if you're moving up the video card market.

Pick what games you want to play, find the supported cards and then see what you can afford. Most cards don't really run well on 8x so 4x is just as good.

Also, if you have a low-end P4 (under 2ghz) you'd probably be better getting a CPU upgrade too as a brilliant graphics card will be held up by a slow processor. Also, get good RAM and lots of it.

Hope this helps.|||As long as its agp like you said your motherboard supports.

You can do that.

What you can't do is put agp in pci express or pci in pci-express

agp gotta be agp

pci gotta be pci

Will a video card with an HDMI port transfer audio from my desktop to my HDTV?

I'm looking to watch movies on my HDTV by running an HDMI cable from the video card to the TV. I know audio isn't transfered through VGA or AVI cables so I want to make sure it will transfer through a card with an HDMI port before I buy a new card. Thanks in advance for your responses!|||I would recommend an ATI/AMD card as all of the ones that I have gotten from them in the past years (since DVI) all have built in HDMI audio on the cards. There are some cards from NVIDIA that support HDMI audio on card and some that require a special cable to connect the video card to a SP/DIF output on your motherboard or sound card.|||Yes. All modern HDMI equiped video cards can carry audio over the same cable.

Sometimes you have to go into the Sound control panel and activate the HDMI playback device to enable the sound, but that's a one time issue.

We have an emachines T3616 Desktop PC with Windows Vista if that helps at all. I know I probably sound stupid asking this but please just answer, don't criticize.|||HI there. Yes different computers have a different slot for the video card and you must get one to match your type.

Your T3616 has a PCI-Express® (PCI-E x16) so that is really good. You'll need to make sure that it says PCI-express on the video card when you buy it.

To get you started, here is a link to newegg.com, a really reliable online electronics retailer with great prices. I have sorted the video cards by PCI express x 16 for you, so any of these should work.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis…

Good luck with your search.|||This depends on your mother board. There are three types of slots that video cards typically fit into: PCI, PCI Express, and AGP. For your model you have both the PCI Express and PCI. I would go PCI Express.|||It appears to have a PCI Express x16 slot available. Most video cards now-a-days will fit in it. Your Dell's built-in INtel GMA4500 video chipset is fine for browsing the web and watching video clips on Youtube, but not cutting-edge games.

If you're just looking to play games like the Sims and World of Warcraft, then a $50 card like the Radeon 4650 is fine:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

For smooth gameplay in tougher fps titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 then you'll need a card in the $100 range, like a GeForce 9800GT or Radeon 5670:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

And for high-end games like Crysis you'd be looking at $150 and higher cards like the Radeon 5770.

Keep in mind that installing a video card more powerful than a Radeon 4670 will require you to upgrade the computer's power supply as well, adding another $40 to your total:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

What's a good desktop video card to but for basic multimedia functions?

I'm building my own desktop and I am searching on online stores and in Best Buy and stuff and I'm stuck. So I ask, what's a good video card to buy? I need a few things for it to do:

1: It needs to support dual monitors. I have two Dell G2410 24" monitors and I need the video card to be able to support both.

2: I don't need it for gaming capabilities. I need it for just basic computing and simple gaming (ie Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 / Zuma) that also can play movies and TV shows from iTunes.

I posted a question over at computerforums.com and they all gave me answers about gaming video cards that cost like 900 bucks. I don't really mind the price as long as it's not ridiculous.

There is a reason that newer (better) video cards use AGP or PCI-E, and that is because those slots give the card the bandwidth it needs to send the huge amount of data it processes back to the rest of the PC.

So even if you had a killer video card, if you could somehow connect it to your PC using a PCI slot, the performance would still suck, because of the limited bandwidth available to the PCI bus.

Sounds like you will need a whole new PC to play your game.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, amigo.|||I would advise getting a pci express card if you have a slot on your computer for it because thats the new standard now

Video Card for a laptop?

Okay, so the title generally explains my inquiry. I'm looking for a video card (if possible) for my laptop. I cant afford a desktop. And i'm tired of the systems requirements lab telling i pass all the minimum requirements for a game, except the video card. It makes meh mad. So. What would be a good video card (and prefereably a sorta inexpensive one), that i could purchase, and is it even possible to get it into my pc. If so, how?|||The majority of laptops have integrated GPUs which cannot be replaced without replacing your entire motherboard. It is doubtful that you can buy a dedicated card for your laptop.|||Well, most laptops have Integrated Video cards, and you can't upgrade those. Also, a desktop is cheaper than a laptop, so if you could scrounge together at least $500, you could use that and sell the laptop to buy a gaming laptop.

How do i know if my desktop is compatible to a certain video card?

i'm using NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT right now, but need an upgrade for games like dragon age origins II. How do i know if a new video card is compatible with my P5QPL-AM ASUS motherboard?|||Yes. It have a x PCIe x16 slot.

You can also overclock your CPU on just one click. ASUS Turbo Key allows the user to turn the PC power button into an overclocking button. After the easy setup, Turbo Key can boost performances without interrupting ongoing work or games - with just one touch!!

Looking to upgrade my power supply and video card for gaming. HP - Pavilion Desktop p6754y?

I just purchased this pc last week and of course the power supply and video card sucks. Here is the link http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Desktop+/+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+II+Processor+/+4GB+Memory+/+1TB+Hard+Drive/1757098.p?id=1218289373194&skuId=1757098. I am unsure if there are only certain ones I can use that are compatible with my current set up. I am def looking to game so I was the best power supply and video card I can pop in there. Any recommendations?|||It has a single PCIe X16 slot, so I would think anything you wanted to put in there would work. I would be concerned about the length though. Some of the newer cards are getting very long. You should measure the length available in your case and make sure you leave enough for end connectors if needed. I'd recommending trying to get video cards with the side connectors.

As far as power supply, you should be OK with any name brand ATX power supply. It is HIGHLY recommended that you purchase ONLY a quality name brand PSU as the cheap ones are very undependable. The size will depend on what Video card you choose.

What is a good video card for a desktop?

i started playing pc game and i need a good video card but not real expensive and where can i find them online plz help?|||www.newegg.com

for playing new games i'd suggest a 9600GT minimum. GTX 260 or GTX 275 would be great.|||Well, I'd personally recommend the EVGA 9800 GTX+ it sells for about $140 on www.newegg.com and is an excellent card (I actually purchased one myself for my new computer). Just make sure you have the room for it in your case because it's pretty big.

Most cards you'll find at a general computer store (i.e. Bestbuy) will be older cards with hugely inflated prices - I recommend purchasing from newegg even if you don't decide on the 9800, you'll get reliable service and great prices.|||A good video card can only be rated good by the user and not someone else. It's like saying a salesman that keeps telling you that its good but the customer that bought it says it wasn't. You get it?

So I prefer searching on Newegg.com at http://www.newegg.com . They give you customized search results with options searching by price, specs, etc.|||All video cards are good for desktops. If they weren't, they wouldn't have ever been produced.

What is a better Video Card for my Dell Dimension 4600C Desktop Computer?

Because I have a game that I haven't played since I got it. It's"Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and what is a better video card for the game?

This one: 64 MB nVidia NV18 Graphics Card with DVI-TV-Out

or: 64 MB nVidia NV18 DVI Graphics Card with TV-Out

or if neither, what one can I get from Dell? Because you know Dell we have to buy our stuff from them. So, what do you guys recommend I use?|||Number one, you don't have to buy your graphics card from Dell, number two, none of them. Number three, mark this down for future reference, don't buy a computer in a low profile case, it makes finding graphics cards that will fit it harder and you will never get the best in a small form factor either. Looking at the pictures of it, it seems to have an AGP slot so I'd go with this card, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as… or this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

Mind you, they aren't new and aren't the latest cards but they should get you through game.|||When buying a new graphics card make sure it supports the slot type your motherboard has (PCI-Express, AGP, etc...). Once you have that information a good budget gaming card is the Nvidia 7600GS or GT (Runs about 100-150 dollars on newegg.com) You should be able to run most games on Med-High settings depending on your other system specs.

Question about how to buy right video card for my desktop?

I added a video card for two screens from my desktop but its know not picking up my orgianl video card HELP?

If I understand your situation correctly

You were using on board graphics to drive your monitor, and you wanted to use a second (additional) monitor - for which you bought a graphics card.

Alas, it is not possible to drive monitors simultaneously from both on board graphics and a graphics card. Only one may be selected (in the Bios), selection may be automatic, so that the graphics card will be used if detected.

In order to use two monitors you require a single graphics card which has two outputs.

A splitter cable would enable only cloned (identical) displays.

Leads exist which enable VGA signals to be provided via USB - don't go there, a new card with two outputs could be had for the same price.

A PCI nVidia 8400GS or a Radeon HD3450 can be had for under £28 from Scan... If you have only AGP, the GeForce 6200 will set you back £32.78

Two outputs: I'm talking about VGA and/or DVI - S-video and HDMI are not suitable for connection to standard monitors.

You may require a DVI-I to VGA converter (about £5) if neither monitor has a DVI connector...|||one card will be AGP the other SCI the primary monitor should be on agp if problems scan for new hardware and reinstall drivers, unless both SLI connected together check all are connected correctly and enable multiple desktops in display settings/control panel

How to install an updated driver for your video card?

Cheap Desktop Case For PSU And Video Card?

So i just ordered a Hp but i tried to customize it with a new psu and video card but they are way too big for the case it comes with, so i'm trying to find a new case but cheap since we wasted alot on the desktop already.

- 4.7" (H) x 6.9" (W) x 7.9" (D) inches

What inexpensive used desktops will support a PCIe graphics card for HD video?

Looking for an inexpensive used desktop that has a PCI express slot and big enough power supply to support a decent graphics card with HDMI output, such as the ASUS nVidia GeForce 210 or similar. Using this for HD video mostly, no gaming.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks|||Most desktops built within the last 3-4 years should be fine... something with at least a dual-core processor and 250W or higher power supply. Recent motherboards all have a PCI-E x16 slot, and that's enough for a Radeon HD 5450 (which is quite inexpensive, but a step above the GeForce 210 and Radeon HD 4350)

The biggest potential pitfall - many inexpensive desktops are slimline models, which can only accept low-profile graphics cards and often have weak power supplies (sometimes even below 200 watts). So look a regular tower instead.

With a 220-270 watt psu, you'll have no problems running a Radeon HD 5450.

http://www.techspot.com/review/244-ati-r…|||hi michael

to be honest mate your better off buying a "motherboard bundle" which comprises of a cpu, motherboard and memory.... and then all you need to do is use your existing hard drive, dvdrw drive, psu and case......this is a inexpensive way to bring a pc up to date and you can get some excellent bundles ... for example the "

Novatech Motherboard Bundle - Intel Pentium Dual Core E5800 - 2GB DDR2 800Mhz - Intel G41 Motherboard"( http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods… ) is just £104 and you get the excellent dual core E5800.... a g41 chipset motherboard with a pci-express x16 slot and 4 x sata ports... and 2gb of ddr2 memory running at 800mhz

another bundle worth considering is the "Novatech Motherboard Bundle - Intel Core Duo E6700 - 2GB DDR3 1333Mhz - Intel G41 Motherboard"( http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods… ) which has a E6700 cpu and also has a g41 motherboard..... but has 2gb of faster ddr3 memory clocked at 1333mhz

another option would be a "barebones bundle" which is a step up from a motherboard bundle and also has a case and a psu.... check the range at http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/bareb… note : all the bundles have a pci-express x16 slot and 4 x sata ports !

out of all these barebone bundles i recommend the "Novatech Barebone Bundle - AMD X2 255- 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz - Onboard NVIDIA 7025 Graphics - 4 Bay ATX Tower Case & PSU"( http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods… ) this is based around a AMD dual core cpu ( x2 255 ) and a nvidia 7025 motherboard however theres 4gb of ddr3 memory clocked at 1333mhz which makes this bundle a powerful set up ..... add your existing hard drive and dvdrw.. and then your choice of graphic card ( i recommend the HD5670.... avalible for just £59 from http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods…

so basically the above barebone bundle for £150... and the HD5670 for £59 means you will have a powerful pc with a decent graphic card that has a HDMI and DVI output.... all for under £220 !

i hope this helps michael... however any questions let me know

good luck mate !

Whats a good thing to look for in a video card for a desktop?

Whats a good thing to look for in a video card for a desktop|||Aside from the performance, I would also consider the physical size of the card. Some of the newer units can be rather large and take up nearly two expansion slots.

If you are upgrading integrated graphics you will likely have a slot available for the graphics hardware. Be sure to know what the bus type is. AGP, PCI, PCIxxxect...

You will also need to know if it requires its own power or will it run off of the motherboard. You may need to upgrade the power supply if you get a card that is high performance.

You should be aware of the output connections. There are VGA, DVI, HDMI. You might find that your monitor isn't compatible with fresh gear.|||heres two good places to find out how good a video card is.

PS You may have to upgrade your memory a bit too, depending on what OS you have. If running Vista, you could use more memory. Just running WoW on my PC uses about 3.3GB of total memory (I have 12GB). I'm sure higher end games will make use of more...

Your Earthwatts is a little bit different because it has 2 +12v rails. You could easily get away with a 6770 despite whatever it says on the box.

Which Video/Graphics Card Works Best For This?

I have an Acer AX3200-U3630A mini Desktop computer. The computer is great and the specs are awesome, but I need a video card that can satisfy my gamer needs!

I've heard about low-profile video cards that feature the GeForce GT series. Are they compatible with the Acer? If not, what can?|||You'd better choose the ATi HD 4650 , around $100 but it is really a great deal.

With Geforce GT, I think it should be 7600 at the same price, but less performance than 4650.

Do i need a new power supply for new video card?

i got 8600gt 256mb with a 300watt ps and i was thinking of getting a 9600gt 512mb card. do i really need to upgrade my ps?

i got another desktop with a 400watt atx ps, could i use that one if i need to upgrade?|||whts ur current PS wattage ?

I'd suggest to use a new heavy one surely, or else the performance WILL drop

Problem with an upgraded video card in a vaio desktop?

I have an upgraded video card which I understand uses more power than the stock one. When I first installed it the card was working. It lasted about two days and then the pc stopped booting. I don't even get a post beep, but when I put the stock card back in everything works fine. Would too small of a psu allow it to work for a couple days then be so weak that the post beep wouldn't sound, or do you think the card is bad?|||You can try the video card in another PC to see if it works. If it does, then it's the PSU's fault. If it doesn't work, it's the video card's fault. This can occur with either situation. But, in reality, I would think the PSU would be at fault if you can actually see the BIOS splash screen.

I hope this helps!

What's a good price range for upgrading my five year old desktop's video card?

i want to play some online games (guildwars!!!) without my computer lagging like crazy. about how much should i pay for a video card that can play guildwars/ wow? plz help!|||I play guild wars or at least I used to...

The problem may be more then your video card like what processor do you have I'd expect a pentium 4 and 512MB-1GB RAM.

If you don't have that it's not your video card.

But as for video card for a good one expect it to be about 200-300 bucks anything less then 200 will be garbage in most cases.

Is there an inexpensive video card that will satisfy the recommend reqs for Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Sims 3?

Need to get a new video card for desktop Windows PC. P4 3GHz processor, 1GB RAM, only have 1 AGP slot for video. Might upgrade RAM as well.|||Dont listen to the guy recomending the ATI card its PCI e. You will not find any AGP card that will run those games. I think you are going to have to get a new motherbaord when you do get the 8600gt only 40 and it runs crysis at medium settings.|||Yes there is if u like ATI products then buy the ATI HD 4550 it's really nice I have it and it runs crysis on all medium and I get about 30-45 fps regurely and it's ok 65$

Good PCIE video card for a desktop?

I have a Dell desktop 2.6Ghz , 2GB RAM and play games every once and a while. Can anyone recommend a good video card that has pretty good gaming capabilities and is around $150/200? Thanks in advance.|||Radeon HD 3850 definately destroys that market. Now going for $180 on newegg.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…|||7600 gt is real nice, i like it. Also the 8600 gt is a little more and handles a lot, its worth the extra $$.

If you would rather go ATI Radeon, the 2600 xt is pretty good but cant compete with the 8600 gt.

What video card is better for gaming with Dell Studio XPS 8100 Desktop?

what video card is better for gaming with the PC 1 GB ATI Radeon ™ HD 5770 graphics

or the Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 1.8GB Single??|||The GTX 260 is better for today's games but less future-proof. But honestly, if you're configuring a system from Dell I would choose NEITHER!

First of all, Dell overcharges for their video card upgrades. You can get a Radeon 5770 for $160 at NewEgg. A GTX 260 costs about $180 (the 1.8gb model is a waste of money)

But why buy a GTX 260 when you can get Nvidia's new GTX 460, which does support DirectX 11!

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gefo…

I recommend ordering the XPS system with the cheapest video option Dell offers (integrated graphics), then buy these online:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

That combo is much better, and probably costs about the same.|||The GTX 260 is faster. The drawbacks are it sucks more power, runs hotter and doesn't support DX11. If you're not concerened about DX11 support or running a 3rd monitor, the GTX 260 is the better overall performer.

http://www.techspot.com/review/209-ati-r…

http://www.legionhardware.com/articles_p…|||It really depends on the resolution you play at and the games you play. They should perform about the same. the 5770 does support DX11 while the GTX 260 does not, but nevertheless the 5770 is not powerful enough to utilize DX11 efficiently anyway, so it will not be a big loss over GTX 260. If you do not have a preference then go with GTX 260.

Hope this helps.|||Best graphics card for your system is Nvidia , i think AMD is not good for your PC

What's a good video card for a 280w psu?

Here's the 280w desktop

http://www.computer-show.com/commerce/catalog/product.jsp?product_id=3015&czuid=1296091096044

I'm trying to find a video card that is good for playing world of Warcraft.

Thank you|||hi mate

theres not many cards that will run with a 280w power supply however some entry level cards like the radeon HD5450 and geforce 8400gs should be ok..... these dont require any additional power via pci-express connectors and can draw their power from the pci-express x16 bus

in regards to world of warcraft this isnt as demanding as other games and you should be able to run it at low detail with the above cards..... but dont expect to run it any higher than this......

another problem is the size of your case...... this limits the size of the card you can use.... however the above cards can be purchased in "low profile" form factor...... these are basically much smaller than standard size cards,,, and have a bracket thats one third smaller than standard cards

heres two cards that i would recommend taking into consideration your 280w psu and small form factor case

1) XFX ATI Radeon HD 5450 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express Graphics Card ( http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Component… ) .....this is a decent card that will run world of warcraft at low to medium detail depending on the resolution.....

2) Arianet GeForce GF210 512MB DDR2 PCI-Express Graphics Card ( http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Component… ) ... a entry level nvidia card thats a capable performer and should also run world of warcraft... again depending on the resolution

i hope this helps, any problems let me know

good luck mate !

i know dell rewires their power supplies special and an off the shelf psu will nuke the motherboard

there are companies that build after market dell power supply units you might want to consider upgrading it|||It's kinda complicated so I'll explain briefly. You first have to figure out what type of card you're going to need, for example pci, pci x16, or AGP. The reason why is that different computers have different slots that would alow a specific card to be inserted into it so if you buy a wrong card you might have to return it and get the correct one. After that you can go and look for them online or at a store. Make sure that you do not mistaken PCI with PCI x16 or PCI Express 2.0 x16 because they are not the same. And since you have a Dell XPS 400 desktop I believe your slot would be a PCI x 16. I would recommend going to newegg.com for your shopping because their graphic cards are inexpensive and they're service is excellent.|||yeah just make sure you got a good power supply and room in your case for it and it appears you do. your power supply i would recommend be at least 500 watts some would argue with that but it's plenty of power especially in intel based systems where your vid card requires more power than the processor of course most powerful cards even require more than amd's even these days. also amperage output on your rail for your vid card supplemental power plug can affect it too gut given your system you should be good to go.|||you hav a PCI-E slot so all you have to worry about is having sufficient power for something like the 8800 GS you might want at least 350W but for something like 8800 GTX you would want 450W(make sure the psu fits)|||If you're using a GeForce 7900GS, then there's no doubt that you're able to upgrade to future GPUs. Video card for an HP Pavilion Desktop m7790?

So what I'm wondering is, a) what if I just went to Best Buy and picked out a graphics card and installed it -- might that bypass this problem, and b) if so, any recommendations for one that will work in this PC and with Vista?|||Do not screw up and go to best buy for a graphics card. That would be the unpardonable sin. Newegg has the best prices on graphics cards.

For one thing you might as well open up the case and find out which kind of slot you have, PCIEx16 or AGP.

http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_…

Here is a list of HP computers and find exactly which model you have and go from there. I am thinking you have a PCIEx16 slot but I need the exact model # to be certain.

There's little doubt your motherboard can take the Radeon HD 5970. The power supply would need to be 650W or higher (very unlikely) to power a monster card like that. Of course, you could upgrade the power supply.

The other thing to watch out for is the length of the video card - which is often longer than the mother board is wide. Make sure you have a couple inches gap between the edge of the motherboard and the disk drive cages to allow wiring to be run.|||haha, you may want to rephrase your question.

Best Video Card for 350 watt power supply?

I have a dell 530 with 6gigs of ram and a quad core 2 duo processor. I mainly want to edit video using pinnacle software. I have the the video card that dell sent me with the desktop. Any help would be great|||Wow, a 350W running a quad-core? I suppose you can look into the GeForce 8400GS or maybe 9400GT or even a 9500GT. Try this power supply calculator: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalcul…|||dells power supplies are usually more powerful than they say so 350w is more like 400-450w .

id say if youre not a gamer get a hd4650 for around $50 or a hd4670 for $60

both are good for media and average for gaming|||I would stick with Nvidia's 7800 series..I use one in my HTPC which has a 250w ps...but I only have 2 harddrives, 1 bluray/dvd drive, and 4gb ram...so it plays movies and has some gaming ability.

Differences between desktop/laptop video card of same type?

What differences will i notice while gaming between a GeForce 8 video card for a desktop, and the same model for a laptop?

(example: if my desktop has a GeForce 8600 GT and my laptop has a GeForce 8600M GT [Both 256MB video cards], what differences will i notice, if both desktop and laptop have the same processor, RAM, and video quality settings)|||the same

I need a video card for my emachines t3882 desktop. Do i need a PCI or PCI express?

Or is there any other way I can tell?|||This is hilarious.. even the user manual doesn't say!!!

http://www.emachines.com/support/product…

However, the pictures show what appears to be a PCI-Express slot (darker color) in addition to a couple of PCI slots. Open your case and look. If all of the expansion slots are short white ones, then your system only has PCI. If there's a different colored longer slot nearest to the processor, then it's either AGP or PCI-Express (and in the user manual photos it looks like PCI-E)

Here's what a PCI-Express slot looks like (light blue in this photo)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/…

I recommend downloading the SIW program, which can give you all the details of your computer's hardware. including the motherboard model number. Then it's easy to look up the specific motherboard and confirm what video slot type it has.

Keep in mind that most gaming video cards (GeForce 9600GT or better) will require a power supply upgrade as well. If your factory power supply is 300 watts, then you can install a Radeon 4650 or 4670 without having buy a new power supply.|||You will need a PCI Video card.

There is a way to tell, you would need to open up your computer and look at the slots on the motherboard. There are several different slots available depending on your particular motherboard.

AGP - Typically is dark brown

PCI - Typically is white

PCI-Ex16 - Typically is longer than a PCI slot

PCI-Ex1 - Typically is a smaller slot on the motherboard.

What is the best video gaming video card for a desktop?

i have up to 300 dollars to spend and i want the best i can get thats up to date|||Try www.newegg.com or www.tigerdirect.com. But rememeber the better the card the better your power supply, and monitor has to be so look out.

What would be a good video card for my computer?

hi guys, i have a dell dimension 4600 desktop from like 2001/2002 and im considering getting a new video card for it but don't know which one to choose. im afraid ill have compatibility issues and such. i also want one thats mid-priced and sort of a new model, not too old b/c it might not perform too well. PLZ HELP!|||im assuming you have

Dell Dimension 4600 (Pentium 4 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD, XP Home)

with that

i would personally go with an ATI card

because you get more "bang for the buck" as they say

and i would go with

either the 2600 , or the 3870

both of which are amazing cards

i've owned them both recently

now i own the 3870x2

i would suggest the 3870 right away

because its a lot better

but im not sure if you'd really be getting your moneys worth

due to the fact that you have a P4

so you might be limited by your CPU

and if you havn't already

upgrade to 1.5gb or 2gb of ram as well, possibly faster memory if you think needed

What the best Video/Graphics Card for my computer?

I have a desktop PC that has a ASUS IPIBL-LB Motherboard that uses a PCI Express X16 bus for my video card. My system is 32bit home edition. At the moment my video card is an Nvidia GEFORCE 8500 GT, but it broke and I want to buy the best one I can find, or at least a really good one. Any recommendations???|||I recommend looking at this site and look to see what the best ones are then look at the prices and then choose one. The fastest single GPU is the GTX 580 but it costs about $500 dollars.

What is the best video card for my Aspire AX3400 Desktop PC?

I need something which is cheap (under $150.00) and can handle games like the Force Unleashed II. Here's the URL to the Newegg site:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…|||The problem is you have one of those tiny miniboxes. The most you can do is get what is called a half-height card and that is usually one of the cheapo cards. Looking at the specs, you don't have a PCIe X16 slot, you only have the capability of integrated graphics, so I don't think you can even put a card into that box, not even a cheap one. You have to have AT LEAST ONE, PCIe x 16 slot or the more old fashioned AGP type slot, neither one of which you apparently have.

Video card for hp desktop?

i have a hp dc7600 small form factor base desktop computer with a 3.0 ghz processor p4. 300w power supply.pci-express x16 slots looking for a video card that will allow me to play descent games.|||You will have to upgrade your PSU for any really good cards, but you will get away with any low end DDR2/3 card with 300watts.

Anything more substantial will require a 6/8pin PCI-Express power connector, and your PSU probably doesn't have one.

I would recommend a 4850 512MB or 1024MB, anything more would be limited by the 3Ghz P4.

And any good brand 400w-500w PSU will have two PCI-E connectors and enough amps on the 12v rails for a decent card.

Most games will run fine with that setup aslong as your monitor resolution ins't ludicrously high.

Is your case for full hight cards?|||any of the newer cards will work i suggest 9800gt for good performance at reasonable price p4 3ghz should do ok but your power supply could use upgrade if you don't want to upgrade power supply you will probably have to use something like 8500gt and the games you can play will be limited

What type of video card do I need for Gateway GT4024 desktop?

I have a Gateway GT 4024 desktop computer that doesn't have a video card. What would be the best one to buy?|||the "best" one to buy?

:/

Nvidia GTX590 or Radeon HD 6990|||ur computer uses the Xpress 200 chipset so it has PCI Express.

the cheapest card that will let u have an HDMI support and stream to your computer is the ATI 5450

if u want to play games like the Sim 3 u need a 5670.

Radeon 5770 ($140)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis…

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis…

or even lower, Radeon 5670. ($70~100)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis…|||if hd video and casual gaming is your need then go for gt430, great graphic card for a cheap price. Also supports directx11, 3d blue ray playback and physx effect in gaming. It can handle games at 1280*720 resolution with max settings. If you want something silent then go for hd5570 ddr2 from asus, it doesn't has any moving parts and runs cool and silent.

Which video card should i buy for my desktop?

im confusing about which card is better the XFX GeForce 9800 GT http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4259702&CatId=3670 or the Diamond Radeon Hd4670 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4348739&CatId=3669

which card should i buy..i have a gateway LX6200 which has 8gb ddr2 ram..amd 9500..400w power supply..http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668196.php|||Well, you will need a new power supply unless yours has a 6 pin pci-e connector on it. If not, get a 500W one, that is what I use to run my 9800GT. Anyway, get the 9800GT. It is way better then the 4670. People have been playing Crysis(me included) at 1650x1280(i think that is it) on all mainstream settings. That is with 2GB of RAM and a 4400+. So I would recommend at 9800GT.

Is it a good idea to buy a cheap desktop and just upgrade the video card for gaming?

i saw an emachines with 4gb of ddr3 of memory, amd athlon x2, and 500gb hard drive for $370. or is building a new one from the ground up better?|||Yes, it is a good idea to get a cheap desptop and purchase your own graphics card. Especially if you don't know how or want to build your own. I personally prefer to build my own, but a lot of people go that route of buying a prebuilt system on-sale with on-board graphics, and then purchasing their own graphics card. If you want an even more powerful graphics card (one that requires a bigger powersupply than 300 watts), you will need to upgrade the powersupply too. Considering most prebuilt computers from the likes of HP and Dell, and probably emachines have weak and cheap power supplies, (they practicly give them away when you consider the price of the final product) that is not such a bad thing.|||I am sure it’s OK also install reginout for optimal gaming.|||sometimes yes its better. if you think about it just 4gb of Memory and Windows OS is already 200$

so as long as the power supply it comes with is good enough then yes its not a bad idea|||Not good idea, build from the ground up.

Where can I find a video card for my Dell Dimension 3000 desktop computer?

I have a Dell Dimension 300 desktop computer, the monitor quit working but works when I connect it to my labtop... I was told that is needs a video card? where can I find these for a good price?

Thanks|||Ok, I researched your computer. And you have a PCI slot. So that's the kind of video card you need. Now do you just want the computer monitor to work? Or do you also want to game?

There are 3 types of video card connections. PCI , AGP, PCI-E. So make sure you just pick a PCI card. You have an older technology, so PCI-E will not work.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

That's your best bet. You can play games too. Not very good though. PCI isn't really for gaming!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis…

all those cards should work with your system.

And this is how to install it.

http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforu…|||you know you can google the answer.
