Is it a good idea to buy a cheap desktop and just upgrade the video card for gaming?

i saw an emachines with 4gb of ddr3 of memory, amd athlon x2, and 500gb hard drive for $370. or is building a new one from the ground up better?|||Yes, it is a good idea to get a cheap desptop and purchase your own graphics card. Especially if you don't know how or want to build your own. I personally prefer to build my own, but a lot of people go that route of buying a prebuilt system on-sale with on-board graphics, and then purchasing their own graphics card. If you want an even more powerful graphics card (one that requires a bigger powersupply than 300 watts), you will need to upgrade the powersupply too. Considering most prebuilt computers from the likes of HP and Dell, and probably emachines have weak and cheap power supplies, (they practicly give them away when you consider the price of the final product) that is not such a bad thing.|||I am sure it’s OK also install reginout for optimal gaming.|||sometimes yes its better. if you think about it just 4gb of Memory and Windows OS is already 200$

so as long as the power supply it comes with is good enough then yes its not a bad idea|||Not good idea, build from the ground up.
