I was reading a lot of posts and heard that the GeForce8800 is a really good gaming card. What i need to know is what type would i need to buy and such? (GT or GS) On one post people were talking about AGP or PCI and such, im not too sure what these mean, but my computer specs are: HP s3500z, 64 bit system (4gb RAM), AMD Athlon dual core processor 4850e. 2.5ghz I just need to know more precisely which card would work best for my computer..and if there is another good gaming card that is cheaper and works (almost) as well..please let me know! my card is Geforce 9500GS btw|||By PCI, they most likely meant PCI-express. That and AGP refer to the type of data bus on your mobo that accepts the card. The bus type is very critical because an inefficent bus (elderly design) can nullify performance gains of other parts of the pc or the card.
For PC's of the late 1990's and early 21st century, the standard was AGP, but this was supplanted by PCI-express. You need to look at your PC's specific info, though I saw one being auctioned on eBay that had a PCIe slot, so you should be okay.
Hardware-wise, performance, in theory, will vary depending on the app - the newest iteration of MS Flight Sim makes good use of quad-core CPU's, but many other programs run just as well on dual-core systems. This may just come down to an issue of how much performance are you willing to pay for.
If you had a specific game in mind, I'd check with tomshardware.com, which uses programs that measure how well different cards will run a given game.
