What video card to get for a desktop?

OK, I wonder what video card I should get for a desktop. I know there are cards like the GTX 580 which is *supposed* to be the world's fastest DX11 card, but I wonder if I could get something a little bit more cheaper with performance that wouldn't go too much behind. After all, DX11 doesn't really make graphics outstanding. At least a card that would be sub-par with this laptop GPU would already be nice:

Market drops fast, and I'm not thinking of getting a desktop just now, but I want to hear what people've got to say. Don't forget to post links w/ prices (in USD so it'd be easier for me to convert) and benchmarks. Thank you all in advance :)|||edited: I wasn't satisfied with my answer.

I think the video card that would match an SLI 485M would be the GeForce 560 Ti.

Well, if you're looking to buy a desktop, there's a setup that won't drop too much in price.

The i5-2500k cpu is only $220 and is the new standard for CPUs.

In terms of gaming, the i7-2600k isn't that much better as the following benchmark shows. The hyper-threading of i7 give it an advantage. Same goes for the AMD Phenom X6 since the games out right now and in the near future never use more than 3-4 cores.

The P67 motherboards are around $200 now, and should drop down to the $130ish range, but there's a huge demand for these since 14% of the CPUs sold these days need these motherboards. so it won't drop for at least 3-5 months.

Also, it has been reported that the P67 motherboards will be compatible with Intel's upcoming 22nm "3D transistors" Ivy Bridge cpus which make the motherboard a better investment. The Asus P8P67 Pro is a great choice (USB 3.0, SATA III, SLI, EUFI BIOS, Bluetooth Tranceiver)

The i5-2500k is faster than any CPU under $500 and beats AMD's 6cores. Also, the i5-2500k will overclock to 4.3GHz (95% likely), 4.5GHz (75%), 4.8GHz (50%), 5GHz (25%). These are just estimates of what I've observed from others.

Video Cards: The sensible option is to SLI a pair of GTX 460s (around $130 each). It'll be comparable to a GTX 580 solo. I would keep the GTX 460s, until the prices on the 570s drop to a more reasonable price (hopefully around $200). GTX 570 in SLI or tri-SLI would be good options if you want to make a high-end system. The GTX 570 in SLI will be close but fall short to a GTX 590.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gefo…|||justainc... says it right. Go for either 460 in SLI (good example is EVGA GTX 460 2WIN) or go for AMD 6950 or 6970.|||The 580 GTX is overpriced at $500. I have the 570 GTX which trails it by only 14-15% in performance for $325|||Try a 9800gt

or try a gtx 460 i have one and its awesome
